Clunes Attractions

Historic Fraser Street and Buildings, Site of first gold strike in Victoria

Clunes has shops, cafes, bakery, supermarket, newsagency, post office, art supplies and museums. It has an impressive primary school built in 1875 and is the country campus of a large co‑educational college. It attracts artists, authors, photographers and film‑makers, as well as those seeking relaxation and tranquility.

The township is rich in heritage buildings, streets with original verandahs, fascinating land forms and historic relics left from the gold diggings which commenced in 1851. The wealth founded on gold enabled many grand buildings to be erected, including magnificent bluestone churches and the elegant Town Hall, built in 1872. Although deep-lead mining has long since ended, the occasional nugget is still to be found in the district!

Within easy driving distance from Clunes are many places of interest and picturesque beauty, such as the Grampians National Park where kangaroos and koalas abound, and the Macedon Ranges and Spa Country. These provide opportunities for hiking and walks in spectacular scenery and for visits to such places as the natural spas‑and health resorts at Daylesford and Hepburn Springs where there are also many restaurants, cafes and antique shops.

Clunes has a golf course, and fishing is possible along Creswick Creek, which meanders through Clunes, and at the impounded waters at Tullaroop and Tuki. Tuki has a famous trout fishing facility with spring‑fed ponds and a licensed restaurant.

Superior wines are produced at Mt Beckworth, seven kilometres from Clunes, and further afield , at Macedon and the Pyrenees‑Moonambel area.
